Perma Pure uses a proprietary epoxy with a high corrosion resistance to bundle the tunes in the “header”. This material has been tested to work well with Nafion and keeps the seal between the sample gas and the purge gas. The same material is used in the FC100 Humidifier. For larger FC humidifiers, a proprietary polyurethane is used to perform the same function. Because this product was designed for fuel cell applications where only clean water is hsed, the enhanced corrosion resistance of the epoxy was not required and a more suitable material was found that would work better with larger bundles (up to 10,000 tubes on the FC800).

Troubleshooting FC Leaks and Connections

The end cap connections are conical NPT (National Pipe Thread), which is an American standard that might not be familiar to users in other countries. Because the threads are conical, over tightening the NPT connections causes the thermoplastic end caps to crack in-service and cause leaks. For this reason, we do not recommend Teflon tape to seal the threads for this reason, as the telflon makes it too easy to over tighten them.

We also recommend to use plastic fittings with FCs – metal fittings can also cause cracking, especially with higher temperature applications. The thermal expansion of common metals used is greater than the plastics used and can also be a source of cracking.
